We have heard of attorneys who turn into poker professionals, or physicians who leave their careers to play professional poker. But have you heard of a wrestler who turned into a poker professional? Well, we do have a poker professional who used to be a wrestler. Furthermore, he also was a surfer prior to becoming a poker professional. We are talking about Lee Watkinson.
We don't really know the similarities of wrestling and surfing to playing poker. But perhaps, those two sports taught Lee Watkinson how to become aggressive, a characteristic that is important to poker professionals.
Born on October 18, 1966, Lee Watkinson graduated with a degree in economics but he did not use his degree to look for work. After graduation, he went on becoming a wrestler and surfer.
Lee Watkinson became visible to the poker public when he cashed in the money in events conducted at the California State Poker Championship and the Five Diamond tournament of the World Poker Tour in 2003. This poker professional placed 4th and 3rd, respectively.
Lee Watkinson also participated in several World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker events in 2004 and 2005, and finished in the money countless times. Participating in these events allowed this poker professional to improve his playing techniques and strategies. This is the reason why in 2006, he won a World Series of Poker bracelet from his participation in a Pot Limit Omaha game. His winnings from that particular game totaled to US$655,746.
The latest contribution of Lee Watkinson to the poker industry is winning first prize at the 2008 Crown Aussie Millions Championship, wherein he won US$137,137.
Lee Watkinson has a total of more than US$3,000,000 poker winnings. This poker professional has been investing his money in ventures that are far different from the poker industry. First, he has teamed up with record producer David Kershenbaum to set up a record label called Rebel Yell Records. Second, he has established a jewelry line called Hardcore Elegance. Third, he has been appointed as the chief executive officer of the clothing company Criminal Mind.
This poker professional is also a spokesperson of the Cortland Brandenburg Foundation, which is a foundation that concerns the living conditions of chimpanzees. He and his fianc� Timmi are both involved in the Cortland Brandenburg Foundation.
This only goes to show that Lee Watkinson is not only good in wrestling and surfing, but he is also good in establishing businesses and in supporting organizations. But playing poker is what he does best.
